Children in urban areas may identify with classroom discussion about pollution. It is a common topic to address in areas potentially impacted by environmental pollution. At a young age, they are taught to become aware of how the environment affects their lives and the necessity for them to protect it.
In the 1980's, a favorite PSA included, "Woodsy Owl" who would sing a jingle to remind everyone to care about their environment, "Give a hoot! Don't pollute!" There was also "Iron Eyes Cody", the depiction of a Native American Indian who shed a tear in disdain for environmental pollution. Understanding the ramifications of environmental pollution is quite the challenge at any age.
While young children are not fully aware as to how their families cope with environmental pollution, assimilating with the ways of city life is plain and simply put, necessary. Learning about recycling reused non-biodegradable products is can quickly become a fun activity that integrates science and math. As if there is not already an overwhelming number of things to worry about on any given day, it is especially concerning for families to consider the research studies that suggest a link between environmental pollution and low birth weight, autism, asthma, childhood cancers and diabetes. Without question, environmental pollution, can have lasting affects on a child's overall well-being. n♥
